Today, I will guide you through the process of obtaining an EIN for your estate.
You will need an EIN to open an estate bank account. If you haven’t opened one yet, you need to get an EIN first. It’s easy to get one online at irs.gov. Once you have an estate bank account, you’re good to go. It’s a simple process, and I’ll show you how to do it step-by-step on my computer.
Before we proceed any further, I want to make a disclaimer. I am not a licensed accountant or CPA. Therefore, I suggest that you consult with a CPA for any tax-related matters. They are experts in their field and can provide you with the best advice. However, if you wish to proceed with the process yourself, your CPA might provide you with the same instructions that I will be giving you, or they may even obtain your EIN on your behalf. The process is straightforward and can be completed online. So, without any further ado, let’s move on to the screen capture and see how we can obtain your EIN.
Go to IRS.GOV
To apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) on irs.gov, follow these steps:
1. Click on “File” and select “Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN)”
2. Click “Apply Now” and choose “Estate” from the list of legal entities
3. Enter the name of the deceased person, such as John Doe, along with their Social Security number
4. Fill out all the required information and click “Continue” until you reach the end of the application process
5. The IRS will provide you with an EIN once you’ve completed the application Keep in mind that an estate is a legal entity created as a result of a person’s death. Even though you may not use the name “John Doe,” following these steps will help you obtain an EIN for an estate.
