In the state of Maryland, probate cases fall under the jurisdiction of the Orphan’s Court where the deceased individual resided.
The Orphans’ Court functions as the probate court, overseeing the legal process of administering estates. Put simply, its primary responsibility is to supervise how the assets of deceased individuals are managed, regardless of whether they left a will or not, as long as they owned property in their sole name. The court holds the power to guide the actions of personal representatives (executors or administrators), oversees the guardianship of minors’ property, and in certain counties, is even responsible for appointing guardians for minors.
